How to Explore a Career Before You Commit to It
By Creators Connect ·

Choosing a career often means committing years of school, training or work before you really know what the job is like. You can lower that risk by exploring on purpose first.
1. Exposure: see what exists
List the careers you know about, then find out what sits around them. Most fields include many roles beyond the obvious ones. Read, watch and, most of all, talk to people doing the work.
2. Clarity: narrow it down
For two or three careers, find out what an ordinary week looks like, what people find hardest and who does well. A one-hour conversation with a professional is often more useful than days of reading. Use our 30 questions to ask a professional.
3. Preparation: test the skills
Try a small piece of the work: a short course, a project, volunteering or a practice assignment. Ask a professional to give feedback on what you make.
4. Access: meet people who can open doors
Build relationships before you need them. Follow up after conversations, share your progress and ask who else you should meet.
5. Entry: take the first step with your eyes open
When you apply for the internship, apprenticeship, program or role, you will know what you are walking into and why you chose it.
Keep a record
Write down what you explored, what you learned and what you decided after each step. A simple record helps you see patterns and explain your choices in interviews. Creators Connect participants use a Career Passport for exactly this.
