How to Prepare for an Informational Interview
By Creators Connect ·

An informational interview is a short conversation with someone who works in a career you want to understand. It is not a job interview. You are there to learn. Done well, one conversation can save you months of guessing.
1. Decide what you want to learn
Write down the one question you most need answered. Are you deciding whether a field fits you? Trying to understand a specific role? Looking for the best way in? A clear goal keeps the conversation focused and respects the other person’s time.
2. Do your homework
- Read about the person’s role, company and industry.
- Look at what they have shared publicly, such as interviews or posts.
- Note the basics you can find yourself, so you do not spend the conversation on them.
3. Prepare five to eight questions
Choose open questions that only someone in the role can answer, like “What does a hard week look like?” or “What would you do differently if you were starting today?” See our list of 30 questions to ask a professional.
4. Introduce yourself in 30 seconds
Practice a short introduction: who you are, what you are exploring, and why you wanted to talk to them. Keep it simple and honest.
5. During the conversation
- Arrive on time and keep to the time you agreed.
- Listen more than you talk, and take notes.
- Ask follow-up questions when something surprises you.
- Do not ask for a job. If the conversation goes well, ask who else you should talk to.
6. Follow up within 24 hours
Send a short thank-you that mentions one specific thing you learned and what you plan to do next. If they suggested a next step, do it, then let them know.
7. Write down what changed
After every conversation, note what you learned, what surprised you and what you will do in the next 30 days. Creators Connect participants record these reflections in their Career Passport.
