What Is Work-Based Learning? A Guide for Schools

By Creators Connect ·

Work-based learning connects what students learn in school to real work. It gives students direct contact with professionals and workplaces so they can understand careers before they choose one.

The work-based learning continuum

Most programs describe work-based learning as a progression:

  • Career awareness: students learn that a wide range of careers exists, through speakers, panels and media.
  • Career exploration: students look closer at specific fields through conversations with professionals, workplace tours and job shadowing.
  • Career preparation: students build skills through projects, mock interviews, resumes and workplace-readiness training.
  • Career training: students gain hands-on experience through internships, apprenticeships and paid work experience.

Why exposure comes first

Students cannot aim for careers they have never seen. Many young people only know the jobs held by the adults around them. Early exposure widens the range of futures they can imagine, and makes later preparation and training more meaningful.

The challenge for schools

Counselors and CTE teams know work-based learning matters, but building and maintaining a network of professionals and employers takes time most staff do not have. That is often where programs stall.
